Civics Scholars Travel to SLC

Thirty (30) Civics Scholars, including 11 freshmen, visited the University of Utah College of Fine Arts. Scholars learned about the University of Utah's College of Fine Arts and also, how to create zines, some of which will be featured in the college's Zines Exhibit! Scholars also learned how to use prompts to move a concrete image into abstraction.

At the Utah Museum of Contemporary Arts, scholars experienced a local artist's (Gilmore Scott) work in the Altered States in the Acid West juried show about human impacts on the West.

At the Utah Capitol, scholars learned about the legislative process with 25 scholars sitting on the floor of the House with Representatives Arthur and Monson. Representative Monson said, "Thanks for giving them this experience. I was touched and uplifted by them all. Let me know how we can support them further."

Scholars also learned more about the committee structure by attending the Natural Resources Committee Meeting. These experiences were made possible by a grant from the Utah State Legislature. Georgiana Simpson is the Civics Capacity Coach and she stated that "this trip is a perfect example of how scholars can learn civic engagement through a variety of content areas!"

Miss Indian Broken Trail Princess Meets Utah Governor

The San Juan County Youth Prevention Coalition also travelled to the Utah Capitol. MIBT Princess, Katiana Ben, had the opportunity to meet and greet Governor Cox on behalf of Whitehorse High School!

Additionally, the MIBT Princess represented in Shiprock for President Buu Nygren's State of the Nation Address, the Dine Knowledge Bowl in Blanding, the Bluff Balloon Festival, the Rock Point Song and Dance Festival, and the Weber State University Honor Band.

WHS was recognized by the State of Utah for making tremendous growth in academics!

The school is currently NOT designated as School in Need of Improvement for any category! Co-planning among math, language arts, and special education teachers, along with co-teaching inside the math and language arts classrooms is leading to all scholars learning at higher levels. Overall proficiency for LA, Math, and Science is on a steady rise since the pandemic interrupted learning at school. The School Community Council (SCC) recently hosted a workshop for parents about Grading for Learning to help people understand how a grade in a course is determined by the knowledge and skills scholars demonstrate on assessments.

Parents can help scholars learn even more by checking in on their IXL progress for Math and Language Arts. Check out this video resource about Helpful IXL Tips for Parents!
